As the name suggests, Oberjoch (1136 m), the well-known and highest winter sports and health resort in Germany, is located in a Joch landscape: to the right and left, imposing pre-Alpine peaks rise up to the sky. From the centre of the village, after a short hike along the easy Ornach Panorama Trail, we reach the alpine pastures high above the Ostrachtal valley, where our view widens considerably. Especially the Jochschrofen (1625 m) offers impressive views and panoramas. To the Hirschalpe, where we find a nice place to stop for a break with a view of the nature reserve „Allgäuer Hochalpen“, we descend again a little way. Then we take the path through the Hirschbachtobel (be careful here when it is wet) down to Bad Hindelang. From there we can take the bus back to our starting point.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the car park „P1“ in Oberjoch, signs with the inscription „Ornach Panoramaweg“ point us in the right direction. We cross the through road, pass the church on the right, then turn left between the houses and head uphill. Behind it we come to a fork in the road, where we keep to the right and then to the left at the next one. Following the forest path in the high forest, it soon turns into a climb over grassy mats. We now follow this up in a few serpentines and reach the Ornach, a ridge with a cross. This is also a popular take-off point for paragliders and a vantage point for hikers. From here our view sweeps üover the popular Tannheim climbing rocks, üover the Hintersteiner mountains and üover the peaks of the Kleinwalsertal valley.

We now descend briefly directly behind the Ornach (i.e. on the north side) and come across the European long-distance hiking trail E4. We keep left, i.e. uphill, and soon reach a gentle saddle on the right below the Jochschrofen. From there, after only a few metres, we turn left down to the Hirsch-Alpe, which we reach in a few minutes. If you want to climb another peak, do not descend to the left from the saddle, but continue straight on to the 1651 m high Spieser and descend first to the southwest and then in an arc to the east to the Hirschalpe (for the route, see hiking map). After a stop for refreshments, we do not take the road, but the hiking trail that leads west below the Kreuzbichel. We soon reach a wide grassy ridge with a wonderful view and hike downhill towards Hirschbachtobel and Bad Hindelang. The Hirschbachtobel itself is a unique scenic and geological experience! (Attention: When it is wet, the descent via the Hirschbachtobel should be avoided. In this case, we recommend the descent from Hirschalpe via the tarred alpine path to Bad Hindelang). The Café Polite is then the first outpost of Bad Hindelang. Behind it, we continue to follow the path down to the town centre.

If we keep to the right, we reach the Kurhaus and 100 m further west the bus station, from where we return to our starting point.

Super Bergwanderung, die auch Kinder ab ca. 8 Jahren gern laufen und die ihre Highlights im Abstieg vom Ornach und der Durchquerung des Hirschbachtobels hat.
