High up on the Alpspitz and the Edelsberg
In a gondola of the Alpspitzbahn, you go up to lofty heights. If you want to get up to the Alpspitz as quickly as possible, take the cable car from Nesselwang to the top station. From there you hike to the summit at 1575 metres above sea level and on to the neighbouring peak Edelsberg (1630 m). Once you reach the top, you can relax and enjoy the view of the Allgäu and Ammergau Alps, as well as the Tannheim Mountains.
If you are not in such a hurry and are in good shape, you can work your way up from the valley station in Nesselwang along various hiking trails. There is a lot to discover around the mountain: the Nesselwang waterfall, where the water plunges 90 metres into the depths, offers a special natural spectacle. A detour to the medieval castle ruins of Nesselburg or to the pilgrimage church of Maria Trost is also worthwhile.
It is not only in Nesselwang that you can enjoy good local cuisine. On your tour around the Alpspitzbahn you are sure to find the right place to stop for a bite to eat: the Enzianstube awaits you at the middle station with two large sun terraces. Right next door, a petting meadow keeps the smallest hikers happy. At the top station you can visit the popular Böck sports centre or the Kappeler Alp.
The Edelsberg is also easy to climb from the other side. If you start in Röfleuten instead of Nesselwang, you will not be disappointed either and can extend the hike to the Alpspitz. On this varied tour through woods and meadows, you also have the opportunity to take refreshments at a hut along the way.
The AlpspitzCOASTER, the summer toboggan run in Nesselwang, is also located on the Alpspitz. This can not only be ridden all year round, but even at night under floodlights. If you want to get your adrenalin pumping even higher, you can do so on the AlpspitzKICK. Germany's fastest zipline sends you hurtling down the valley at up to 120 km/h from the mountain station 1.2 km to Nesselwang.
Hiking in the Alpine foothills - rivers, lakes and green meadows
However, it doesn't always have to be high up, because the wonderfully green Alpine foothills with their grassy hills and picturesque lakes also offer unique views. If you are on your tour in and around Nesselwang, you will always catch a glimpse of the Allgäu Alps and the Tannheim Mountains on the horizon.
In the Wertach Valley, family-friendly trails await you along extensive meadows and tranquil places like Maria-Rain. The pilgrimage church there is probably the most beautiful village church in the Allgäu.

Children will enjoy a stop at the Reichenbach holiday village where they can explore the playhouse and playground. When you arrive at the Grüntensee, you have a wonderful view of the Grünten, which is also called the „Wächter of the Allgäus” because of its isolated location on the edge of the Alps. You can also take a tour around the lake, but the distance should not be underestimated.
A little smaller, but no less popular, are the Attlesee and the Kögelweiher. In the two moor ponds near Nesselwang you can not only swim, the wetlands around the lakes also invite you to discover the unique world of plants. Since they are not far from Nesselwang, you can also take a leisurely hike here with children and prams.
On the Allgäu Hiking Trilogy through Nesselwang
The Allgäu Hiking Trilogy is a network of long-distance hiking trails with three main routes that cover 876 kilometres across Allgäu. With the characteristic names Himmelsstürmer, Wiesengänger and Wasserläufer they stand for the different landscapes of the Allgäu. From 53 different stages you can put together hikes to suit your taste. Two of the three long-distance hiking trails also pass through Nesselwang.
However, if you want to do one of the routes completely by foot, you need to allow plenty of time. Hiking individual stages or just a few days on the trail is more suitable for most hikers. This is possible because the stages are usually laid out in such a way that the start and end points are in villages and towns.
